Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
